Tono uranium prospect,
Central Japan

The Tono Natural Analogue Study has been performed in the Tono uranium prospect in Japan.

The four study areas in relation to relevant performance assessment technical issues are:

  • Solubility and speciation of trace elements in reducing conditions
  • Retardation properties of the sedimentary rock
  • Characterisation of geochemical disturbance
  • Characteristics and transport properties of colloids in reducing groundwater
The current phase of the Tono Analogue Project (TAP) has been concluded with the publication of final overview papers in Geochemistry 6 (1), 2006

"Analysis of the excavated archaeological iron using xray-ct - Download PDF 821kb

In order to evaluate the long-term corrosion behavior of carbon steel, we investigated the rust of archaeological iron buried in soil. It is difficult to obtain experimental data of the long-term corrosion in the laboratory. However, it is possible to obtain corrosion data over several hundred years by using archaeological iron and to develop a reliable model for the long-term corrosion behavior by using such natural analogue data."
